AMERICAN SHEET MUSIC FROM THE FIRST AND SECOND WORLD WARS
Songs of the Patriot takes viewers back in time to relive the American wartime homefront of both World Wars through lyrics and cover illustrations of popular songs and sheet music. The exhibit(s) explore how music publishers, songwriters, and cover artists rallied support for troops overseas. For example, publisher Leo Feist often used the back covers of sheet music for long patriotic messages declaring that “Music Will Help Win the War… A nation that sings can never be beaten…”
The exhibit(s) also explore the booming sheet music industry, early chromolithography and the significance of piano playing as a form of home entertainment.
