THE UNDERWATER PHOTOGRAPHY OF BRUCE MOZERT
Bruce Mozert, by the age of 20, was already an accomplished photographer working in New York City. He relocated to Silver Springs, Florida, just North of Ocala National Forest, in the fall of 1938 around the same time Tarzan films were being shot in the translucent waters of the central Florida springhead. Soon after arriving, he built his first underwater camera case. The underwater pictures he took with his invented camera technology were so clear that MGM producers took them back to Hollywood and used them in the making of their Tarzan picture. Soon his pictures were being picked up by wire services and magazines throughout the world. Mozert became well known for his underwater photographs, as well as his sexy pin-ups and animal photos. He also worked as an underwater motion picture cameraman with NBC, ABC, CBS and on many Hollywood productions.
This exhibit explores the culture surrounding Silver Springs, Florida that attracted tourists and artists alike, the crystal clear waters that served as the alluring backdrop to our favorite early films, as well as the invention of the underwater camera that spurred Mozert's aquatic career.
Viewers are invited to take their minds on vacation as they experience the underwater playground of Bruce Mozert's Silver Springs.
