AMERICAN VICTORY POSTERS FROM THE FIRST WORLD WAR
Curated from a historical perspective, this adaptable collection encompasses a variety of themes while exuding a classic and stylish aesthetic. The World War I posters presented in this exhibit characterize and encapsulate the themes of the wartime effort as presented to the American public by the Committee of Public Information, a propaganda agency organized by then President Woodrow Wilson.
Highly censored and visually raw, American war posters were meant to inspire citizenship, patriotism, and duty. The posters were highly successful at raising public funding for the war in the form of Liberty Bonds as they relied on the tactics of mass advertisement and the prevalent style permeated the American home front.
Themes: World War I, world conflict, Woodrow Wilson, propaganda, advertising, patriotism, censorship, local war efforts, public sentiment, war funds, public engagement, American cultural development, Uncle Sam, illustrative art, lithography, state and local distribution, Committee of Public Information, US Army, US Navy, Liberty Bonds, Four-Minute Men
